Pick your language
On first launch you choose the language the explanations come in — Uzbek, Russian, English, Turkish, Spanish, French or Portuguese — and a time for a daily reminder (20:00 is preselected; Not now turns reminders off).
3000 English words, never alone
Compono teaches the 3,000 most useful English words, in the order people use them. Every word comes with the phrases it keeps company with and example sentences; many also have a memory hook, and many carry a note on the mistakes learners commonly make, all explained in a language you already know. A spaced-repetition schedule decides when each word comes back.
Compono is built on one idea: learn a word together with the words it keeps company with, not on its own. So each of the 3,000 words arrives inside its phrases and sentences, and comes back for review on a schedule.
On first launch you choose the language the explanations come in — Uzbek, Russian, English, Turkish, Spanish, French or Portuguese — and a time for a daily reminder (20:00 is preselected; Not now turns reminders off).
A new word comes with its collocations, example sentences and, for many words, a memory hook. Where learners who speak your language typically go wrong with it, a “Watch out” note shows the mistake, the right form and why.
Short exercises — pick the word that goes with a phrase, fill the gap, pick the phrase for a meaning, build the phrase — and a spaced-repetition schedule (FSRS) that decides when each word returns. Reviews are always free.
The list follows how often words are used, so the ones you meet first are the ones you will meet most. It is sorted into 23 topics, from People & Family to Grammar Words, and into five levels — Beginner, Elementary, Intermediate, Upper-intermediate and Advanced (A1 to C1). Browse by topic or by level, or search in English or in your own language.
No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Your progress and your settings stay on your iPhone: there is no server of ours to send them to, and the app asks nothing about you, not even your age. The words, phrases, sentences and fonts all ship inside the app. The only connection Compono makes is to Apple’s App Store, for the Pro purchase, and it carries nothing you did in the app. The open-source libraries inside the app collect no data.
Each word is taught inside its collocations — the words it keeps company with, like heavy rain — and in example sentences graded for learners.
For many words, a short, vivid association to give the word something to hold on to.
Meanings and explanations come in Uzbek, Russian, English, Turkish, Spanish, French or Portuguese, whichever you pick. The app’s own screens follow your choice where they are translated (English, Spanish, Russian, and Uzbek in part) and are in English otherwise.
A “Watch out” note shows the wrong form, the right one and why — for example “I opened door” against “I opened the door” — written in your language, where learners who speak it typically slip.
Short exercises and a spaced-repetition schedule (FSRS) that decides when each word returns. Your progress screen shows what is due, how many words you have started and how far along the course you have reached.
The first-launch setup preselects a daily reminder at 20:00; pick another time or Not now, and change it any time in Settings. It comes at the time you chose, on your phone’s own clock, usually with a real phrase from your own words (the first one also estimates the minutes a review takes), and not on a day you have already studied — never a count of reviews, never a streak warning. The widget (iOS 17 or later) is for your home screen or lock screen: a word and its phrase, on the home screen also its pronunciation, and on the medium home-screen size the phrase’s meaning. Flagged words, and phrases that contain one, never appear in either.
Compono is for everyday English. It is not an exam preparation product, it gives no exam score or CEFR result, and it cannot promise how much you will learn. The five levels are a way to order the course.
The vocabulary includes some everyday swearing and sexual words, because people use them. They are flagged in the content, taught only among the Pro words, and never offered as a wrong answer for another word. Flagged words, and phrases that contain one, never appear in a reminder or on the widget; the meanings shown there are not filtered, so a word that is not flagged can still have a meaning that mentions a sensitive subject.
The explanations, memory hooks and notes are written by Compono, and like any text they may contain mistakes. If you find one, write to us and say which word.
Version 1.0 has no recordings of words being pronounced. Compono plays only two short sounds for right and wrong answers, and they follow your Ring/Silent switch.
There is no account and no sync. Progress is kept on the iPhone and moves to a new one only through an iPhone backup. Delete the app and it goes with it.
Compono 1.0 is made for iPhone, held upright, on iOS 15 or later. The home-screen and lock-screen widget needs iOS 17.
Free to download, with no trial and no subscription. The first third of the course, and every review, is free for good. One optional purchase opens the rest.
The first 1,000 words (levels A1 and A2), with every sense of each word, its phrases and sentences, and all of your reviews. Reviews are never locked, and neither is any word you have started.
Words 1,001 to 3,000 (levels B1 to C1), taught the same way. One payment of US$5.99, a one-time in-app purchase through Apple — the App Store shows the price in your own currency. It is not a subscription, there is no trial, and nothing renews. You can restore it with Restore purchases on any device signed in with the same Apple Account.
